Armed Williston Area Man Fatally Shot Rushing Deputies

By Terry Witt – Spotlight Senior Reporter

Two Levy County sheriff’s deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave following a shooting Saturday afternoon in Williston Highlands in which a man armed with a handgun rushed at the deputies and was shot dead.

The deputies were called to a report of a person attempting to commit suicide by overdose at NE 151 Terrace, a home in Williston Highlands, at approximately 1:30 p.m. When they arrived they were confronted by a man armed with a handgun.

Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Tummond said deputies ordered the man to drop his weapon but he instead rushed at the deputies.

“Both deputies discharged their weapons and the subject, a 37-year-old white male, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Both deputies were uninjured during this altercation,” Tummond said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been asked to investigate the shooting. The crime scene remains active. The deputies will remain on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed by FDLE.

“There is currently no threat to the community and Sheriff Bobby McCallum asks that we keep everyone involved in our prayers,” Tummond said.
