The second Beautify Bronson Day attracted a small crew of volunteers Saturday but still resulted in several streets being cleared of litter.
A number of fire hydrants were also repainted by Bronson Fire Rescue as part of the Beautify Bronson event.
Town Manager Susan Beaudet was present for the event to assign streets. Councilman Tyler Voorhees was also present but had been called to serve as a pallbearer at a funeral and couldn’t stay long.
Beaudet said the idea for Beautifying Bronson came out of a Capital Improvements Strategic Planning Committee last summer.
“We did the first one in October and we’re thinking we’ll do it every six months because that corresponds with GFL Environmental bringing the roll-off dumpsters,” Beaudet said. “We try to pick up the trash along roads and try to keep it pretty around here.”
District 4 Levy County Commission candidate Charlene “Watson” Calvillo was assigned a couple of streets to pick up. She said she owns property in Bronson and wanted to take part in the cleanup.
“I am seeking office and I own a lot on Easy Street in Bronson. I wanted to take part in cleaning up in a town in which I have an interest,” Calvillo said.
Calvillo is hoping to win the Levy County Commission race in District 4. The district includes Cedar Key, Rosewood, Otter Creek, Gulf Hammock, the upper part of Inglis, and throughout Fanning Springs, she said.
Another reason for Calvillo taking part is that she attends every county commission meeting and always sees Beaudet in attendance as well.
“I see Ms. Susan at every commission meeting and I figured I would help her out. Not all the city managers show up in county commission meetings. I know because I show up too,” she said.
This reporter volunteered to clean up North Pine Street which runs next to the U.S. Post Office. I cleaned up around and behind the Post Office, including a sandy road behind the Post Office and North Pine.
The debris was a combination of glass bottles, old beer cans, soda cans, paper trash that had blown into the weeds, and even an old pair of socks.
