Bronson businessman James Beck has been named Volunteer of the Month by the Florida Department Corrections for providing weekly mentoring to inmates in a faith-based dorm at Lancaster Correctional Institution in Gilchrist County.
“He was recently recognized for his ministry and dedication to supporting inmates’ transition back into the community,” the Department of Corrections said.
Beck, owner of A&A Restaurant, teaches Life Mapping, a personal development class that aims to guide inmates in a positive direction by identifying their current challenges and mapping out a realistic plan to overcome and succeed.
He also developed a class called Happy Days, which focuses on seven principles which include communication, dependability, and a positive attitude.
Both programs mentally and spiritually prepare inmates to make better choices after they are released.
“Beck is passionate about returning citizens and their successful re-entry into the community. In fact, he is so invested that as a business owner he hires former inmates in order to provide an opportunity for a better life,” DOC said. “FDC volunteers provide vital mentoring to inmates while incarcerated. Mr. Beck is committed to mentoring them while they are inside and once they are released.”
