People in wheelchairs can now access the track and nearby pavilion at James H. Cobb Park in Bronson.

The sidewalk was designed with an off ramp to the pavilion.

The Town Council authorized $1,600 to build a 40-inch wide concrete sidewalk from the parking lot to the pavilion and track.

Town maintenance staff on Wednesday rearranged three large picnic tables in the pavilion to give wheelchair visitors an opportunity to move easily from the sidewalk to the pavilion.

The park is one of the few municipal parks in this area that has a track for walking and running. The track was difficult to access by disabled people in wheelchairs until the town added the sidewalk.

Spotlight requested the sidewalk in an effort to give handicapped people an opportunity to use one of the park’s most popular facilities.

Mayor Beatrice Roberts brought the sidewalk proposal to the town council for approval. The sidewalk was approved unanimously.

She also gave town maintenance staff direction on Wednesday at the request of Spotlight to rearrange the picnic tables to give disabled people access to the pavilion. The picnic tables were blocking access up to that point.

James H. Park is open from 5 a.m. to midnight every day. The town council recently added two additional security lights to the south side of the track to give residents access to the track after dark.

The sidewalk is just a slice of good news at a time when the coronavirus is making headlines.
