Two Bronson Races Draw Candidates; Mayor Won’t Run for Re-Election; Qualifying Ended Friday

By Terry Witt – Spotlight Senior Reporter

Bronson Mayor Beatrice Roberts, who served 20 years on the Bronson Town Council, didn’t qualify Friday to run for re-election in the Sept. 14 municipal election, but two newcomers to city politics have qualified to run in Group Three, the seat held by Roberts.

Allen Alexander, who says he will volunteer his time to serve on the council and won’t accept compensation, will run against Sherrie Schuler, a Bronson Middle High School teacher, and daughter of former Mayor Franklin Schuler,

In Group One, incumbent City Councilman Robert Partin, who works in the insurance industry and has lived in Bronson all his life, will run against Mark Kyjseth, a Bronson realtor who has lived in Bronson for about a year.

Alexander and Kyjseth participated in a series of Capital Strategic Planning Committee meetings hosted by Town Manager Susan Beaudet. The purpose of the meetings was to identify projects to improve the town, its facilities and meet its equipment needs.

There will be no race for the Group Five seat. Newcomer Tyler Voorhees was elected to office without opposition. He was appointed to replace Berlon Weeks on the council.

Beaudet said all four candidates signed an affidavit swearing they have lived in Bronson for six months prior to qualifying, are 18 years old, and are registered voters in Bronson.

“It’s to make sure everything is on the up and up,” Beaudet said.

Roberts experienced a family tragedy Monday when her grandson passed away in a traffic crash. She had been undecided about running prior to the tragedy.

Beaudet said several of the candidates have indicated they are planning to begin posting campaign signs. Alexander is preparing to go door to door and host a dinner at a church.

This is Beaudet’s first election. She is in charge of running the town election. She is getting advice from Supervisor of Elections Tammy Jones on how to meet state requirements for operating a municipal election.
