Did 2018 BoCC Chairman John Meeks, retired County Attorney Anne Bast Brown, and then Clerk of Court Danny Shipp approve and file an illegitimate or fraudulent deed purchasing the old High School for $10 when the purchase was $1.5 million? Their names are on the Deed filed on September 21, 2018, as follows:
- Board of County Commissioners of Levy County, Florida, John Meeks, Chair, Date September 21, 2018
- Attest: Danny J. Ship Clerk of Circuit Court and Ex Officio Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners
- Approved as to Form and Legal Sufficiency, Anne Bast Brown, County Attorney.
Should the Deed be Amended?
Should the deed be amended for the sake of accurate records to reflect the $1.5 million sale? Did the county try to avoid paying document stamps and recording fees or mislead the public? Is the public held to a different standard of filing records than government entities? The public pays for and is entitled to access to accurate records filed by government entities as required of its citizens. Did county officials violate Florida Statute 817.535; Unlawful filing of false documents or records against real or personal property?
Should Clerk of Court Matt Brooks Include Check Register in Official Minutes?
At the time of this article, I have been unable to verify the payment, the check number, or the check amount to the School Board of Levy County. The official minutes do not have a detailed check register to verify a specific check payment. Perhaps the newly elected Clerk of Court Matt Brooks should include the check register in the official minutes. Brooks did promise transparency while campaigning. There is no tab on the Clerk’s website for public records/FOIA requests that I could find to request a copy of the check or the register.
Levy Taxpayers Duped Again?
One final note. The taxpayers paid to build the old Bronson High School and the new. Did the taxpayers get taken in again by the 2018 Levy School Board and County Commissioners by buying a building in such disrepair?
