Public Workshop in May Focusing on Affordable Housing

By Terry Witt – Spotlight Senior Reporter

An affordable housing workshop is scheduled for May 19 at the Levy County Government Center in Bronson to provide people with valuable information about finding housing that fits their financial needs.

“We want to make sure the folks who are needing these services are aware of these services,” said Gussie Boatwright, who chairs the Levy County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee.

The public workshop begins at 9 a.m. in the Levy County Commission meeting room at the government center located behind the Levy County Courthouse on School Street.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.

One of the advisory committee members is providing refreshments for guests attending the workshop. Some of the people making presentations will be in person while others will present their information by internet Zoom on overhead television screens.

Boatwright said one of the presenters is the Florida Housing Coalition. They provide technical assistance to communities and governments concerning various government resources and participate in providing funding.

Together We Build It has accepted an invitation to participate in the workshop. The non-profit corporation out of Alachua County provides essential repairs, Boatwright said. The organization works with local governments.

Central Florida Community Action Agency has had a relationship with Levy County for many years and will take part in the workshop. It provides some housing rehabilitation services.

Boatright said the county housing advisory committee is excited to announce that Habitat for Humanity will come to Levy County for the workshop.

The Neighborhood Housing and Development Corporation, which serves Gainesville and surrounding counties, will take part in the workshop. Boatwright said the organization is well versed in helping people prepare for homeownership. They work with low to middle-income families on how to prepare for homeownership.

Boatright said a tiny home builder has also been invited to the workshop.

“The affordable housing committee is working really hard to improve housing opportunities for folks in Levy County,” Boatright said.

She said approximately six people have applied to be a member of the board. They are being asked to provide biographical information about themselves and attend several committee meetings to show their level of interest in commitment.

Gussie Boatwright, who chairs the county’s affordable housing advisory committee, speaks to Williston Council members about the May 19 affordable housing workshop at the Levy County Government Center in Bronson.
