Mail-In Ballots Could Play Significant Role in Williston Election Tomorrow

By Terry Witt – Spotlight Senior Reporter

Five people are running in the Williston municipal election Tuesday.

There’s quite of bit of interest in the election as evidenced by the number of mail-in ballots.

For tomorrow’s election, 200 mail-in ballots have been received compared to 50 for the previous election.

Mail-in ballots, also known as absentees, can be hand-delivered to City Hall until the close of polls at 7 p.m., but no later.

A special City Council meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. at City Hall after the voting concludes tomorrow.

According to the meeting agenda, following the preliminary prayer and pledge, the council will recess until election results are ready to be announced.

Mayor Jerry Robinson is opposed by former Councilman Charles Goodman and Daniel Stewart for the mayor’s seat.

Goodman resigned in mid-term the last time he served on the city council.

Councilwoman Darfeness Hinds is opposed by Zach Bullock for Seat D on the council.

Council President Debra Jones didn’t draw an opponent and was elected without opposition to Seat E.

The least known candidate in the election is Stewart, who has had a couple of brushes with the law involving children.

He was accused by Williston police in 2019 of causing physical harm to a minor, but the State Attorney dropped the charge.

In Perry County, Ohio, Stewart pleaded no contest in 2012 to a misdemeanor charge of endangering children. He was booked on 3-1-2012 and released on 3-2-2012.

Williston retained its March 1 voting date this year despite a request from the county elections office to change it to April.

Supervisor of Elections Tammy Jones proposed holding all municipal elections in Levy County in the first week of April every year. Williston declined the offer.
