The future Chiefland Middle High School campus is slowly taking shape as the old campus is dismantled and replaced by new buildings.
School Superintendent Chris Cowart Tuesday said construction of the $38 million school will finish in 18 months.
He said a new gymnasium will be the last thing constructed. Phase 2 of the construction project is nearly complete.
Students are being educated in new classrooms as construction proceeds. Construction work is fenced off from student areas.
The current middle school gym will remain part of the campus. The new high school gym will stand on one side of a new parking lot opposite the middle school gym.
Plans are to keep the old agriculture building on the new campus but agriculture classes will take place in one of the new classroom wings.
The current administration building and attached auditorium will remain part of the new campus. The new media center, called a library in the old days, will stand behind the current administration building and auditorium.
The decision to build at the same location as the old school was made by the community and saved the cost of purchasing new land, but it has forced the builder, Parrish McCall, to work around an active school.
School Board member Paige Brookins expressed pride in the way the new campus is taking shape. Like many Chiefland residents, she is a graduate of CHS and has sentimental attachments to the location.
Chiefland is the last of the middle-high schools to be constructed in Levy County. Bronson Middle-High School was the first and Williston Middle-High School opened several years ago.
