Chiefland Police Chief Scott Anderson won high praise from Chiefland City Commissioners Monday during his annual evaluation.
The board awarded him a one year extension of his contract as the Chief of Police. Anderson earns $62,730 annually as chief, the same as last year and the year before.
Anderson recently opened a restaurant, Foul Play, with partner Ryan Bell, which is located next door to Chiefland Chrysler Dodge along north U.S. 19. Some of the commissioners complimented him on his food.
He also owns The Hemp Station, a business that sells hemp, which has .03 percent THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Hemp is so low in THC it can’t get you high, but it is legal to sell under federal and state laws.
Many people believe it has pain relieving qualities.
Commissioners were exceptionally satisfied with Anderson as their chief. The composite score of the board was 3.9 out of a perfect 5.
Anderson said he has lived within the Chiefland city limits for 20 years and wants to keep his city safe.
“I thank you all for the opportunity to serve the city. I’m a resident here. I don’t plan on going anywhere. I’ve been here for 20 years in the city limits. This is my home, so I want to see it done right,” Anderson said.
Commissioner Norman Weaver said his only worry was the chief’s success as a businessman.
“It just worries me that soon if things are successful we might lose you as an entrepreneur. You got to be an entrepreneur or you don’t stay in business. It will be your blessing but our loss,” Weaver said, adding, “I spoke to a couple of your underlings (employees) and they were very happy with you.”
Commissioner Lewrissa Mainwaring thanked Anderson for his work as chief.
“I do thank you for what you do for our community. You’re always there to help me when I call – I love your views and your values, so job well done,” she said.
Pastor Lance Hayes, the newest commissioner on the board, also gave Anderson high praise.
“I think you’re doing an excellent job. No problems, no issues,” Hayes said.
Mayor Chris Jones said he was happy with Anderson’s job performance.
“I’m happy with the services you provide. I think we have the best police department we’ve ever had in years, not that we’ve had bad ones in the past, but you’re doing a fine job. Proud to have you,” Jones said.
Weaver also thanked Anderson for the way he enforces traffic laws and works with residents from all walks of life throughout the city.
“I think you are doing an excellent job. I like the way you work with all the populations and I like your attitude about slowing them (drivers) down and stopping them but you don’t issue all those tickets because it’s a waste of company time. Basically, the only thing I hate is we can’t pay you what you’re worth.”
“Not a million dollars?” Anderson said, drawing laughter.
