One of the county’s most popular programs, tire recycling, which takes place on Amnesty Day annually, drew another big crowd on June 13.
County officials said 5,283 used vehicle tires were dropped at the Levy County Landfill by 657 customers.
Levy County Commission Chairman Matt Brooks said the free recycling service keeps the mosquito population down. Used tires often lie outdoors and collect rain water. The pools of water become breeding areas for mosquitos.
The county landfill receives a tire recycling grant from the state every year to fund the Amnesty Day program. Brooks said state financial support is a key factor in making Amnesty Day work.
The tires are carried to a tire recycling facility.
