The Levy County Landfill has stopped collecting recyclable materials at designated locations around the county due to the temporary loss of state prison inmates used to sort through the materials.

State officials made a decision to discontinue the use of prison inmates at the landfill recycling center in connection with the ban on people gathering in large groups and potentially spreading the Coronavirus.

Landfill Administrative Director Rod Hastings said people are calling him about not being able to deposit their recyclables at designated locations. He said Levy County people are good about recycling.

He is hoping residents can store their recyclables until the ban on using inmates is lifted, probably in 30 days.

            Amnesty Day

On the positive side, Hastings said Levy County residents can deliver their used vehicle tires free of charge to the landfill on June 13, which is Amnesty Day. The tires can be delivered between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Hastings said the county received a state grant to recycle used vehicle tires.
