Levy County Commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution protecting the second amendment gun rights of its citizens.
The board received assistance from Carson Weeks, a Bronson 6th grader and son of Commission Chairman John Meeks and his wife Stephanie, in reading the resolution declaring the county a Second Amendment Sanctuary.
Carson was the winner of a county level 4-H Tropicana speech contest and was asked to read the resolution. Commissioners adopted the document with no discussion.
A day earlier, the Bronson Town Council adopted a nearly identical resolution declaring Bronson to be a Second Amendment Stronghold in Levy County.
Town Attorney Steven Warm suggested changing sanctuary to stronghold to avoid misinterpretations. He said sanctuary has religious meaning and American cities claim they are sanctuaries for illegal immigrants.
The resolution says the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that, “a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be abridged.”
The resolution also quoted the Florida Constitution as stating that,” the right of the people to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves and the lawful authority of the state shall not be infringed…” The state constitution states that the bearing of arms may be regulated by law.
One portion of the resolution quotes the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, stating, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the United States, nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of the law, nor deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
The resolution said the Levy County Commission declares Levy County to be a Second Amendment Sanctuary, “in order to preserve for the People, of, on, and in Levy County, their rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.”
“We the people of Levy County, Florida, through this resolution hereby declare our rights, our freedom, and our liberty as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America,” the resolution concluded.
The resolution will become part of the minutes of the meeting with Carson Weeks cited as having given the official reading before adoption by the board.
