County Sets April 21 as Amnesty Day for Used Tire Disposal

By Terry WittSpotlight Senior Reporter

Levy County residents can bring their used tires to the Levy County Landfill free of charge on Saturday, April 21 as part of an Amnesty Day.

The free dumping of old tires will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents can bring 24 automobile tires in a single load. Mud grips can also be brought, but no tractor or semi tires.
County Commission Chairman John Meeks, who came up with the idea, won support from his fellow commissioners for the Amnesty Day.

Meeks said the county won’t enforce the one trip to the landfill limit.

“You can make three trips as far as I’m concerned,” Meeks said.

Meeks said he inquired in a conference call to Tallahassee about what could be done to dispose of used tires. Amnesty Day was suggested.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will co-host Amnesty Day with Levy County. Meeks said DEP has money for this type of event.

The illegal dumping of used tires and the storing of old used tires has been a problem in Levy County for many years. Amnesty Days allows people to get rid of those old car tires at no charge.

The announcement of Amnesty Day was made by Meeks at the April 3 county commission meeting.

County Coordinator Wilbur Dean said the 24 tire limit per load was chosen because DEP says that is the number of tires that can safely be carried in the back of a pickup truck.
