The Levy County School Board authorized its staff Tuesday to begin negotiations on a purchase agreement to sell the former Williston High School to BluRock Development, LLC for $1.5 million.
BluRock is a development company from Orlando. School district officials aren’t sure what the company plans to do with the school site on Noble Avenue. The site lies in the heart of the Williston business district.
The company is making a $10,000 down payment to hold the property for 120 days while a purchase agreement is drawn up. The company will use that time to investigate whether the property could be developed for retail use.
School Board member Brad Etheridge asked Board Attorney David Delaney if it was customary to tie up a piece of property for four months with a down payment of $10,000.
Delaney said he doesn’t have much contact with real estate law but his law partner does have expertise in that area. His law partner indicated this type of arrangement is a standard practice.
The school board also is giving BluRock the right to enter the property for the purpose of due diligence, which means BluRock can examine the property to find out if it’s worth purchasing. The company won’t be held liable for any damage to the property during its investigation.
The property includes 11.54 acres at 427 W. Noble Ave.
Williston currently has two vacant school sites. The former Williston High School and Williston Middle School campuses were vacated when the schools merged to form the new Williston Middle High School.
The high school site is considered prime commercial property in Williston.
