Board Priorities Skewed? No Time for Animal Control, or Composting/Barn Waste Ordinances but Time and Money for a Park?

By Linda Cooper

A workshop for a proposed park across the street from the Levy County Government Center and adjacent to the Coulter Cemetery, formerly known as Old Bronson Cemetery is set for Tuesday, October 24, 6:00 PM.  Coulter is one of the oldest cemeteries in Levy County.

The park project was brought up on August 22, 2023, during the regular board meeting, then again at the October 17 regular meeting to schedule a workshop for October 24. There are a lot of unanswered questions. According to the August agenda, potential funding would be from grants or other sources. Other sources were not identified.

The grants coordinator position is still vacant and the other funding sources were not identified.

Projects Ignored:

  • October 20, 2020, a workshop for county animal control ordinance. Ignored
  • Workshop on barn waste/composting, May 9, 2023. Ignored.
  • Animal Control to open on Saturday. Ignored.
  • No public updates on filling vacant veterinarian position or management of animal control. Ignored.
  • Selling vacant county-owned Baker building to put back on tax rolls. Ignored.
  • Grant Coordinator unfilled for perhaps over a year. Why?

These failures fall squarely on the shoulders of the three senior commissioners, John Meeks, Matt Brooks, and Rock Meeks.  John Meeks third term expires in 2024 but he has not filed to run again at the time of this writing.  Matt Brooks is running for Clerk of Court and Comptroller.  Rock Meeks seat expires in 2026.

There are extensive stories on Spotlight on Levy County Government website and FB for those interested in the history of this do-nothing commission.
