Williston Settles City Election with No Contested Races

By Terry Witt – Spotlight Senior Reporter

Williston’s first municipal election in the month of April won’t be necessary.

Everything was settled this week when three candidates qualified without opposition.

Darfeness Hinds, a former city councilwoman, qualified for Seat B held by retiring Councilman Elihu Ross and didn’t draw an opponent.

Former councilman and mayor Jerry Robinson qualified without opposition for Seat C held by his wife Marguerite Robinson.

Councilman Michael Cox qualified for Seat A, his current post, and received no opposition.

The city changed its election date from March to the first week of April this year at the request of Levy County Supervisor Tammy Jones.

All but one city in Levy County, Fanning Springs, has established the first week of April as their municipal election date.

Ross is the senior member of the city council but announced his retirement well in advance of qualifying.

When candidates qualify without opposition, they are automatically elected to the council but won’t take office until the term of the current officer holder expires.
