The second Farm Share food giveaway this year is set for 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, June 9 at Tri-County Community Resource Center in south Chiefland.
Chiefland City Commissioners Monday granted a request by Beverly Goodman, director of the resource center to close NE 1st Ave. to NE 1st St. and NE 1st St. to Park Avenue for the popular event.
The first Farm Share event in Chiefland this year occurred in January and saw 1,050 people in 357 households served more than 30,000 pounds of food donated by farmers.
“Farm Share works with Florida farmers so the food doesn’t go to waste,” Goodman said.
Goodman said Farm Share is bringing enough food in June to serve more than 400 people from the tri-county area. There are no income requirements.
When people arrive they will be asked to sign their name and give their address and the number of people in their household and whether they are receiving any government benefits, but Goodman said they don’t have to disclose whether they receive benefits. It’s strictly voluntary.
In the first Farm Share event, food items that were given away included orange juice, eggs, chicken breasts, milk, soy milk, and cereal. Cars and trucks stretched all the way from the resource center to U.S. 27A.
“A family of four could expect to fill up their trunk,” Goodman said.
Chiefland police and the Levy County Sheriff’s Office Citizens on Patrol will be directing traffic and showing people where to line up.
The serving line will consist of tables filled to the brim with food. People will drive up to the table and receive the food in their vehicles.
