David Peaton, assistant director of the Department of Emergency Management and one of the most talented and best-liked county government employees, is leaving for a job in Alachua County.
Peaton was honored by Levy County Commissioners at their Oct. 19 meeting for his outstanding service to the county in providing leadership and essential communications during storms, the pandemic, and other emergencies.
As the assistant emergency management director, Peaton was often the man who communicated to the public through the internet and with news releases to give residents valuable information.
“He’s only been here a short time but his impact on his department has been phenomenal,” said Commission Chairman John Meeks. “I just want to say thanks to David Peaton personally. He’s a good friend and he is a good assistant director. He’s moving to greener pastures, so we got one from Gainesville and we’re losing one to Alachua
County.”
Meeks was apparently referring to Gainesville City Attorney Nicolle Shalley being hired as the new county attorney for the Levy County Commission. Shalley will start work on Nov. 1.
“David, I appreciate what you’ve done, the leadership you’ve displayed, the help you’ve given EOC Director John MacDonald. You bolstered that department through storms, pandemics, and hurricanes,” Meeks said.
