A Levy County Landfill employee received recognition at the Oct. 19 Levy County Commission meeting for going above and beyond her usual job duties to report theft activities.
Commissioners gave Almarie Sheppard an award for having the courage and integrity to tell her supervisor at Levy County Solid Waste about what she was seeing in her position as a landfill scale attendant.
“For those who don’t know without going into a whole lot of details, Almarie went above and beyond. She saw something she didn’t think was right and she reported it to her supervisor and it led to an investigation and it led to the uncovering of some stealing that was going on at the landfill,” Commission Chairman John Meeks said. “An investigation was done and this person has been charged with a crime.”
Meeks said the reason commissioners brought Sheppard forward is because everyone in county government should strive to report something that’s not above board when they see it or hear about it. Everyone should take the time to speak up and address the issue.
“It’s a fact that this person was stealing from the citizens, stealing from the solid waste department and Almarie went above and spoke out,” Meeks said. “We appreciate her service in doing her job very well but going above and beyond,” Meeks said.
