Two Williston children shared the unique honor Tuesday of being the final students to receive Student of the Month awards from Mayor Gerald Hethcoat.
Hethcoat, whose entertaining style of introducing Student of the Month winners is well known, is retiring after 40 years of public service. He served 36 as a city elected official and four years as volunteer fire chief.
Student of the Year awards will continue when Mayor-Elect Jerry Robinson takes office.
Second-grader Mylie Medeiros, daughter of Angie and Frank Mederios was nominated for the award by teacher Jennifer Tiller, who described Mylie as a great example to her classmates. She completes her classwork in a timely manner and she works hard to complete her homework each week and turn it in on time. She is always willing to help her classmates if they need it. I have seen her go up to students at recess that have no one to play with and ask them to play. She is a friend and wants to make everyone feel loved. It is a joy to have her in my class this year. I am eager to see the progress that she will continue to make not only academically but also socially. I know she is destined for great things.
Fifth-grader Kevin Chen, son of Laura and Charlie Chen, was nominated by teacher Tamara Lutz. Kevin is a very intelligent boy who is dedicated to his academic performance. He goes above and beyond to challenge himself to be a better student. He comes to school ready to learn every day and is quick to provide input in class discussions. He will help other students understand a concept when needed. He is a delight to have in class. I am thankful to be blessed to teach such a bright student.
