Four Williston Council Members Draw No Opposition; Council Pay Raise on March Ballot

By Terry Witt – Spotlight Senior Reporter

Four Williston residents were elected to the city council in January when they drew no opposition in their races during qualifying.

What that means is the only issue on the March 2 city election ballot will be a referendum question on whether city council members should get a pay raise.

The council is asking residents to raise the pay of the council president and mayor from $250 per month to $500 and the other council members from $200 to $400 per month.

As it stands now, Williston is the largest city in Levy County with some of the lowest pay for its council members.

Council members Elihu Ross from Group B, Marguerite Robinson from Group C, and Michael Cox from Group A were returned to office without opposition.

Darfeness Hinds from Group D also ran unopposed. She is new to the council and the only African American member on the board.

Council President Justin Head chose not to seek re-election. His term expires in April.
