Williston Mayor Emeritus Gerald Hethcoat was honored Tuesday night when the community center in City Hall was named for him.

Mayor Jerry Robinson presented Hethcoat with a framed resolution celebrating his 31 years of public service to the city.

The R. Gerald Hethcoat Community Center sign above the front door of the community center was in place when he arrived at City Hall with his wife.

Hethcoat served on the Williston Fire Department for 25 years. He was fire chief for four years.

He was mayor for 17 years and served on the city council for 21 years. Hethcoat founded the Student of the Month awards program for the city. Students of the Month are honored once a month during the school year.

“I have to say when I first moved up here, the first person that showed up in my driveway was this man,” Robinson said.

Hethcoat accepted the honor, saying he didn’t think he was worthy of it.  He said there have been so many great city leaders who served the city.

“This is very humbling,” Hethcoat said. “I feel honored and privileged. I feel so unworthy.”
