On January 6th, Director Mitch Harrell posted on the Levy Government FB page a public meeting announcement for a “Levy County Fire Administration Meeting” on January 16th. The meeting was to be held at the Department of Public Safety compound, the former site of the women’s prison compound on CR 337, in the middle of nowhere.
Questioned Manager Harper’s Concerns About Remote Location
On January 9th, I emailed County Manager Mary Ellen Harper pointing out the remote location and why it was not held in the main Government Complex for easier access to the public. Harper’s official response was “Thank you for bringing this to my attention. After discussing the purpose of this meeting with Chief Harrell, I am concerned that it perhaps should not be noticed as a public meeting. I have directed Chief Harrell to work with Attorney Shalley to determine the appropriate classification for this meeting and will be in touch with you when there is resolution.”
Public Meeting vs Staff Meeting
For the Director of Public Safety not understanding the difference between a staff meeting and a public meeting is very troubling. However, Harper’s transparency and expedited response are appreciated.
